Why Life Issues Matter

The two lists below identify some of the main reasons why Churches for Life is compelled to nourish churches as gospel-driven champions of life. These lists are by no means exhaustive.

Biblical Reasons
  1. The Gospel reveals God’s heartbeat to rescue those in peril and compels those rescued to do likewise with joy and gratitude (Deut. 4:5-10, 24:17-22, Ps. 146:9, Jer. 22:1-3, Hos. 3:1, Mark 2:16, Luke 19:10, Jn. 13:34, 15:1-13, Rom. 5:8, 12:1, Col. 2:13-15, 1 Tim. 2:15).
  2. God established His Church as the locus of all things redemptive in the world. Local churches express this ordinance and therefore must be the hub of gospel-driven life-affirming work in local communities (Is. 42:5-7, 49:6, 51:4, Eph. 1:22-23, Acts 13:46-49, 1 Pet. 2:9).
  3. God commands His people to rescue the weak, especially those “being led away to death” (Prov. 23:10-11, 24:11-12, Ps. 82:3-4, Deut. 10:17-19, Isa. 1:16-17, Jer 7:5-7, Ja. 1:27).
  4. Human beings are of divine worth at all stages of their development, having been made in the image of God, and must be esteemed and defended (Gen. 1:26, 3:22, 5:1, 1 Cor. 11:7, Eph. 4:24, Ja. 3:9).
  5. God abhors “child sacrifice” and “the shedding of innocent blood” and judges those who perform or condone it, or stand idle while it takes place (Ex. 20:13, Lev. 20:2-5, Deut. 12:29-32, 2 Ki. 17:16-18, 23:8-10, Ps. 106:34-40, Prov. 6:16-19, Jer. 7:30-33, 19:4-6, 22:3-5, Ez. 16:20-21).
  6. The law of Biblical “self-love” (i.e. The Golden Rule) presupposes that human beings possess a naturally good self-love and therefore must care for others in like manner (Lev. 19:18, Matt. 19:19, 22:39, Rom. 13:8-10, Gal. 5:14, Ja. 2:8).
  7. God charges His shepherds in particular with the responsibility to warn His people concerning the range of issues described above (Isa. 62:6, Ez. 3:17-18, 33:7-8, 34:1-10, Mic. 3:1-3, 2 Tim. 3:16-17, 4:1-5).
Cultural Reasons

1. Negligence. By and large, the Evangelical Church in the United States has neglected God’s Words, above. Churches must be carefully warned and shepherded into Biblical, gospel-driven, grace-and-truth balanced engagement.

2. Unabated Killing. St. Louisans surgically kill ~5,000 of their unborn children every year. Americans have surgically killed ~46M unborn children since 1973. Chemical abortions (RU-486 and “Emergency Contraception”) are on the rise.

3. Post-Abortive Suffering. Millions of men and women suffer psychologically and spiritually due to their participation in an abortion and need the healing of the Gospel.

4. Pandemic Sexual Sin. In 2008, 1 in 4 teen girls is infected with a STD. In 2003, St. Louis ranked #1 among all US cities for the number of new cases of Gonorrhea, #5 for Chlamydia, and #23 in Syphilis. Approximately half of all teens have sex by the 12th grade in St. Louis/nationwide.

5. Deadly Legislation. Missouri law condones creating and subsequently destroying human beings (embryos) for experimental reasons per MO Amendment 2.

Rescued Rescuers

At CFL, we believe that Christians are by definition "rescued rescuers."  That is, we have been rescued by God through Christ.  He did this while we were yet sinners facing an eternal peril yet having no ability to rescue ourselves.  We believe that God is most delighted when the fact of His gracious rescue grips our hearts and we, with an overflow of gratitude and joy, look after others in peril.  At CFL, we help Christians and churches live out the fact that God's rescuing us in the gospel should result quite naturally and joyfully in our rescuing those in immanent physical peril, like the unborn, embryos, and related persons.
